IRCAD Africa holds its first General Assembly

IRCAD Africa holds its first General Assembly and elect members for the Executive Committee, Organ in charge of financial audit and Organ in charge of conflict resolution.


During the meeting that took place at the Rwanda Ministry of Health on this August 31, 2018, the constitution was adopted and participants elected members of the executive committee, the organ in charge of finance and audit as well as the one in charge of conflict resolutions. Dr King Kayondo was elected the first President of IRCAD Africa of which the head office is located in Kigali, Rwanda.
The newly IRCAD elected President and the Vice President, Dr Guillaume Marescaux together with other founding members signed the constitution in from of the Notary.


During his opening remarks, the State Minister in Charge of Public Health and Primary Health Care said: Today is a big Day, we are very happy that we are reaching this very important step for IRCAD Africa and we, once again guaranty you the full support of the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Health.  


The IRCAD Africa Center is expected to develop and highly promote minimally invasive surgery in Africa and minimize the burden of queues in waiting to be operated on. The Rwanda Ministry of Health is working Rwanda Development Board, University of Rwanda and physicians from Hospitals to play a significant role in this project. will be soon trained to enhance their skills before the Center begins.
Prof. Jacques Marescaux who was attending the first General Assembly via video-conference from Strasbourg in France stated that: “We all know that, Africa will be the most important continent in the coming years and having IRCAD Africa in Rwanda, under the leadership of President Kagame and with a very committed Ministry of Health, when I am looking at the most beautiful building that is going to be constructed in Kigali soon, I am confident that this will be the best IRCAD branch ever in the World”.      
A framework of Memorandum of understanding for collaboration between IRCAD and Rwanda was signed on May 2018 by the Minister of Health accompanied by Rwanda’s Ambassador to France after an intent letter signed in March 2017.


IRCAD is an original research and training center established in France in 1994. Its world renowned fame as a leading research and education expended in almost all continents except Africa. The center is dedicated to the most innovative surgical technical in minimally invasive therapies. It combines medical training, research and development in medical devices, especially in the field of computer assisted surgery, tele-training as well as virtual and augmented reality. Every year more than 5000 surgeons from all over the world are trained at IRCAD France by a team of 800 international experts to obtain high-level skills.
