Rwanda and Egypt sign $3.3 million agreement to supply medical equipment to MY Rwanda-Egypt Heart Centre

On August 12 2024, Rwanda and Arab Republic of Egypt inked a deal on the supply of medical equipment and devices that will be instrumental in treating heart related diseases at the Rwanda-Egypt heart Centre known also as Magdi Yacoub Rwanda-Egypt Heart Care Centre, which is being constructed in Masaka, Kicukiro District.

The first part of the facility, which will be built on four hectares of land, is expected to be operational in the early months of 2026. Its existence stems from the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 6 November 2021 between the Government of Rwanda, the Government of Egypt and the Rwanda Heart Care and Research Centre to establish the MY Rwanda-Egypt Heart Centre, as envisioned by Prof. Sir Magdi Yacoub, a veteran cardiovascular surgeon.

Speaking on the occasion on behalf of the government of Rwanda, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, the minister of health commended, the pivotal role of the heart centre to relieving the burden of cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death and disability in Africa claiming around 17.9 million of deaths globally in a year.

"The centre will be unique as it will specialise only in heart related diseases and will treat Rwandans and others free of charge. In addition to providing quality treatment for cardiovascular diseases, its specialised doctors will reduce the problems of Rwandans who have had difficulties in getting advanced and fast medical care, especially in cases that potentially lead to heart attacks."

He also said that the centre will contribute to the Government of Rwanda's ambitious initiatives to increase the number of health care providers, saying: "The centre will not only contribute immensely to Rwanda's goal, known as 4 by 4, of quadrupling the number of health professionals in the next four years, but will also contribute to prevention programmes by conducting research to understand the landscape of heart disease in Rwanda and the region.

The MY Rwanda-Egypt Heart Centre project is a partnership between two countries, with Rwanda providing the land and Egypt providing the medical equipment and facilities,

Initiated by Dr Magdi Yacoub, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the My Heart Centre project will be a dedicated cardiology hospital with state-of-the-art medical facilities.

Dr. Badr Abdelatty, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned that this phase I of centre construction is at 30 % and the implementation of this project falls with the wish of president Paul Kagame to ensure Rwandan people have quality health care services. The equipment shall be 3.3 million USD and they are intended to be accessed by everyone in need.

The facility will provide free cardiovascular care to both children and adults, underscoring the project's commitment to making healthcare accessible to all.

The construction of MY Rwanda-Egypt Heart Care Centre started in 2021 and will be built on an area of 40,000 m2. The signed MoU will facilitate the transfer of medication between two countries at reduced cost
