Rwanda's Marburg Virus Response: Progress and Resilience

Kigali, 20 October 2024  -  Rwanda's battle against the Marburg virus outbreak shows promising signs of success, as highlighted during a joint press briefing by Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Rwanda's Minister of Health, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Key Developments

  • Outbreak Status: No new cases reported in the past six days
  • Recovery Rate: 76% of patients have recovered
  • Death Rate: 24% of those infected have died
  • Current Cases: Three patients still under treatment
  • Medical Milestone: Two patients successfully taken off ventilators after over ten days – a first for Marburg patients in Africa

Dr. Nsanzimana shared these encouraging statistics while acknowledging the dedication of healthcare workers and expressing condolences to affected families. He urged communities to support recovered patients' reintegration and combat stigma.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros commended Rwanda's rapid and effective response, praising President Paul Kagame's leadership in the national efforts. Based on recent assessments, Dr. Tedros called for the lifting of travel and trade restrictions, deeming them unnecessary given Rwanda's robust health system and outbreak management.

Looking Ahead

Both leaders emphasized ongoing vigilance and public information efforts. They highlighted the importance of community support in overcoming the Marburg virus challenge.

Rwanda's handling of this outbreak demonstrates its growing capacity to manage health emergencies effectively, setting a positive example for the region and beyond.
