Kigali, Friday 26th September 2014: The Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that the patient who was allegedly reported to be having Ebola virus disease signs before passing on at Muhima Hospital on Wednesday 24th September 2014, did not die of Ebola.

Results on samples that were taken from the patient tested negative for Ebola virus disease.

There is no Ebola in Rwanda but due to population movements, there is risk that Ebola can spread to Rwanda at any time. The Ministry of Health urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases immediately. We would like to assure Rwandans and visitors to Rwanda that the Ministry will always provide credible information on any case that is considered a public health threat.

Through the emergency preparedness team, the Ministry continues to take actions for preparedness and response to prevent potential health risks that might be caused by Ebola. Plans have been elaborated to effectively respond, should the disease occur within our borders.

Ebola virus disease is highly contagious and transmitted from person to person. It is characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, sore throat, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pains and bleeding from all body openings. It is not an airborne disease.

The government has put in place measures aimed at protecting Rwandans from Ebola.

Surveillance systems and emergency management systems are in place. Health workers have been trained across the country and are vigilant.

Together with partners, the Ministry of Health has increased sensitization measures about Ebola virus disease through the media and community outreach activities. All this will enable timely detection, notification and appropriate management of any suspected cases to safeguard Rwandans.
