African health stakeholders convene in Kigali to strengthen health systems amid global challenges

Kigali, 3 March 2025 – Over 1,000 global health leaders, policymakers, practitioners, innovators, and experts from various sectors have gathered in Kigali for the 6th Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC2025) to discuss strategies for strengthening Africa’s health systems amid global challenges.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana called for innovative solutions to address health financing gaps and optimize domestic resources. He emphasized the need to rethink healthcare systems, leverage technology—including artificial intelligence—to reduce costs, and foster continuous community engagement to promote healthier lifestyles and combat non-communicable diseases.

Under the theme “Connected for Change: Addressing Socio-Ecological Dynamics of Health,” AHAIC2025 will tackle pressing health challenges, from disease outbreaks and climate-related health risks to sustainable health financing. The conference aims to drive bold solutions for a healthier Africa.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, hundreds of participants took to the streets of Kigali for the Night Run – Walk for Change, marking the start of a transformative week filled with high-energy, action-oriented discussions and bold conversations on Africa’s biggest health challenges.

AHAIC, Amref Health Africa’s flagship convening, is the largest health and development conference in Africa, held biennially. Designed by and for Africans, the conference has become a pivotal platform for shaping the continent’s health agenda. AHAIC fosters collaboration among governments, health organizations, the private sector, and civil society to address Africa’s most pressing health issues through knowledge-sharing, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
